Review – ‘The Holiday House Sitter’ by Judy Moore

Blurb

A recent graduate of UCLA, Molly McAlister has just landed her first job and loves it.

The problem is her demanding boss, who seems to think he’s in charge of her free time too. Under threat of layoff, her boss manipulates her into giving up Christmas with her family in Florida to pet-sit his two beloved purebred poodles.

When Molly arrives at his house in Santa Monica a few days before Christmas, she learns she must also watch two ill-tempered Rottweilers, Darth and Vader, who scare her to death. His hypercritical wife seems to think Molly is a maid too, and leaves her a long list of chores and rules. Molly’s expecting to have a miserable Christmas, but things start to look up when she meets the boy next door and his family. Unfortunately, they’re embroiled in a neighborhood feud with her boss.

Review

Molly just landed her dream job as a web developer for a huge real estate firm right out of college. She’s hardworking, dedicated and smart. The problem? She’s a doormat. Her boss, Mr. Pendleton, forces her to pet-sit his Poodles over Christmas week or he’ll fire her. He doesn’t come right out and say he’ll fire her, but he hints at it. His wife gives Molly a long list of housekeeping chores to do each time she stays over to pet-sit. Molly never stands up for herself because she’s afraid of losing her job. This time around, though, she’s also roped into watching one neighbor’s Rottweilers, another neighbor’s Boxer, and yet another neighbor’s Pekinese and a cat. All at the last minute too.
The only bright light in her life is her boss’s next door neighbor, Chris. Chris is home for college for three weeks and his parents are feuding with the Pendletons. He helps her take care of the animals, his parents treat her like a person, not a servant, and they become fast friends.
This is a sweet New Adult romance centered on Molly’s inability to say no to her boss. Chris is very sweet, as is his family, and their romance develops at a slow, steady pace.
Even though I couldn’t connect with Molly, I liked Chris and enjoyed this story overall. Other than a few typos, it’s well-written and I can’t wait to read more from the author.
