WLK excerpt
River’s POV
You want to have a seat with me in the back? Have lunch together?”
She takes a moment to think about it and finally nods. She follows me from her office to the break room. I can tell that she’s been thinking. If she’s anything like me, she’s thinking about last night. Only I’m willing to bet she’s wondering what she did wrong, why she did what she did, and what she is going to do now. I want to tell her that she didn’t do anything wrong. But to feed her the cliché line of “it’s not you, it’s me” seems like a whole lot of bullshit at this point. I could easily man up and just tell her…but then I risk not only being fired but losing her altogether. Makes me hate being so fucked up. She looks at me with sad eyes as she has a seat at the table.
I pull out a chair across from her and begin sitting our food and drinks on the table. I look up at her with my eyes and catch her staring. She quickly looks away and purses her lips. It doesn’t seem to be sitting well with her either. I’m reducing her to nothing more than a fucking one night stand. What a dick move. I open a straw and place it in one of the thirty-two ounce cups and push it over to her. “Have a drink.”
Her cheeks fill with color and she takes the cup, bringing the straw to her lips. She has a quick sip and looks away from me and down to her right. She can barely look at me. Not like I can blame her. She presses her lips around the straw for a moment and I catch her eyes again. She hurries to look away as she sets the cup on the table. I start pulling her food from the bag. A bacon cheeseburger and a large order of fries from Pepper’s Bar and Grill just down the street. “Hungry?”
She finally looks at me and gives me a little nod. “Starved, actually.”
Then you shouldn’t have told me that you didn’t want anything,” I say. “You have to eat.” I begin unwrapping her burger and place it front of her. She looks up at me confused as I sit down and grab my own burger and fries.
I’m just trying to keep the shop running,” she explains. “I have to work your schedules around all the appointments you have all while making sure someone can be out front in case we have walk-ins.”
Understandable, but you can’t just not eat. It's not good for you.” I say, diverting my attention to my burger. I look up slightly and see that she is chewing quietly but seems to refuse to look at me as she reaches for her cup and has a drink of pop.
Sometimes I just forget.”
Well,” I start, “you shouldn’t. It’s not healthy.”
She gives me a silent nod as she still looks to my left.
Something interesting over there?” I ask, wiping my mouth with a napkin.
Her mouth drops and her eyes move to meet mine. “I’m sorry…I just…” Her voice trails and she looks up at me with the saddest blue eyes I've ever seen in my life.
Lola, this doesn’t have to be awkward,” I tell her. “Things happened really fast last night. I never wanted to make things like this…I just…see I have this thing…” I stop my words and watch as her mouth drops.
Oh, my fucking God.” Her blue eyes go from sad to angry quickly as she pushes her food away.
I shake my head. “No, that’s not what I meant, see, I just…there’s this thing about me.” Out with it, dude. Tell her. Tell her now. Tell her what you are. I look down at her burger that has no more than two bites taken out. “You should eat some more. Two bites will not help you. I know it’s not exactly healthy, but it’s something.”
Do you have a fucking girlfriend?” She snaps in a loud whisper, leaning across the table.
I shake my head furiously. “No! I wouldn’t do that!”
Some disease?”
This one just makes me laugh as I sit back and shake my head. I lean back in my chair and shake my head. “No, I don’t have some STD that I didn’t tell you about.”
Then what?”
You should sit back, calm down, and eat your fucking food, Lola.” I tell her.
Then what?! Just tell me?! What thing do you have?!” She looks directly into my eyes. She’s worried, she’s scared, and she’s a mess. I can see that all in her eyes. She pouts slightly and gets up. “It was fun…really, it was great. I hope you like your job here.”
I love my job,” I tell her, being completely honest. “I fucking love it. Which is why I don’t want to lose it.”
She pouts again, this time crossing her arms and nodding as she starts to walk away.
Lola, sit down, now,” I command her.
She turns to look at me, shocked at my order. Her mouth drops and her arms slowly fall to her sides.
Sit down and eat, now.” I order.
She reaches for the chair and pulls it out slowly. She looks at me, pouts, and finally has a seat, taking a bite of her burger. I look away and smirk slightly. All I can think to myself is good girl.

Manhattan Bound Series #1
By Juliette Braddock
Cover Design: WLK Media

Against the glittering backdrop of New York City, budding theatrical publicist Maxine Kirk, fresh off the bus from a small Pennsylvania town, stumbles into the arms of her beloved teenage crush, unleashing desires that she never imagined.
Enter Drew McKenzie, a rising star on Broadway with dashing looks and talent to match, who masquerades behind the characters he portrays.
Instantly, Maxine finds herself lured into Drew’s high society world only to uncover a complicated man beneath the glitz and glamour of his public persona. As soon as the curtain falls, Drew sheds his stage costumes to reveal a daring Dominant side.
Titillated by his enigmatic life, Maxine clamors to discover a surreptitious and possibly perilous affair with Drew, all the while questioning her own preconceived notions on romance.
Secrets surface, revealing haunting truths that test both Maxine and Drew of their own intentions. But in this high-stakes game of trust, only the strongest survive.

So where are you from?”
A...s-small town—right outside Pittsburgh,” she managed. She had to gather her thoughts. She couldn't stutter her way through an entire conversation with this man all night. Already, she could sense that he was the type who would remind her of her jitters later, and Maxine certainly didn't want this silly evening to haunt her at work.
What brought you to the big city?” he questioned her.
Purposefully, she stopped herself before she answered him and took in a deep breath. “I’ve always been in love with New York,” she explained, thoughtfully choosing her words. “The theater…the vibrancy…the never ending sense that there’s always something to do or someone to see…”
Quite a culture shock for a small-town girl, isn’t it?” he asked, his tone softening a bit.
I’ve been visiting for well over a decade,” she continued and flashed him a weak smile. “I knew what I was getting into.”
You sure about that?” Now his eyes were teasing. “There’s always some element of surprise living here.”
You grew up here?” she asked, knowing he had. She could recite his entire Wikipedia entry, which didn't say much about his personal life other than he was born and raised in Manhattan to an exceedingly wealthy family of Scotch-Irish immigrants. His ancestors built their fortune as early merchants in New York and went on to create one of the longest-standing, upscale department store chains in the United States.
I did,” he said so very simply. “The city is under my skin an in my blood. And just like everyone else, I bitch and complain…but I couldn’t live anywhere else.”
All the while, as they carried on with an air of civility, Maxine couldn't ignore those burgeoning feelings—those sensations—that seemed to set her senses fluttering. The intake of his breath and the gentle patter of his voice soothed her. That fresh scent of him, bathed in Clive Christian cologne, tickled her nose, intoxicating her with a blend of citrus and spice—even though she didn't know Clive Christian from Christian Slater. While he stood so close, he managed to refrain from touching her—even with the slightest of movements—and she tingled…shocked by her ache for his caress.
Maxine couldn't even recall their conversation as it was happening. Drew had managed to send her off to some surreal spot from which she really wasn't too keen to return. Although she attempted to remind herself that she wasn't the only woman he'd engaged with that evening, she enjoyed this stilted repartee between them.
As they stood alone together against the backdrop of Manhattan's brilliance, it remained questionable whether he would even remember her in the morning, and she knew the chances were slim to none. However, she decided to indulge in these unexpected seconds of undivided attention in which he indulged her fully.
Releasing his hands from the bannister, he took a step back but then dared to reach out and stroke the backs of his fingers to her cheek. Maxine was certain that he could feel the heat rising from her skin, but she chuckled softly over the tickle of his touch. Again, he seemed to be surveying her, interviewing her for the next round of she knew not what.
You have all the basics down,” he began. “Smart, well-rounded. Pretty…”
Pretty?” she nearly choked. No one—aside from her parents and Ben—ever complimented her in such a way.
Are you arguing with me?” he inquired with an air of displeasure.
Hold it together here, Maxine, she coached herself. “It’s in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.”
We can discuss that a little later…” he said, just as Maxine felt one huge drop of rain plunk down upon her, right in the middle of her forehead, as she looked up into Drew’s eyes.
Just her damn luck, the rain poured forth from the sky!
Um…I think it’s time to…”
Lunging forward and surreptitiously slipping his arms around her waist, he pulled her close to him. Maxine didn't have time to think—to react—to his quick and sleek move. All the while, she reveled in the slight knock of his knees, the strength of his thighs, the feel of his chest pressed against hers…
It’s time to kiss you, Maxine…”

Manhattan Bound Series #2
By Juliette Braddock
Cover Design: WLK Media

Sweeping through the glitz and glamour of New York’s high society and the drama unfolding in the dressing rooms of Broadway, Wrapped, by Juliet Braddock, continues the journey of a young theatrical publicist’s foray into submission under the tutelage of a dashingly dark star of the stage. Wrapped—the much anticipated sequel to Braddock’s critically acclaimed erotic romance Weakened—is the second book in the Manhattan Bound series.
When Drew McKenzie presents Maxine Kirk with an ultimatum, challenging her to engage in his wanton brand of desire, she readily embraces her awakening hunger for a lifestyle that defies her perceptions of romance.
Entranced by Drew’s charming appeal and by his sensual assault to her senses, Maxine clamors to discover every nuance of this new relationship, ravenous to explore verboten fantasies that seem possible to fulfill only with Drew.
Along the way, he introduces her to his glamorous world of wealth and celebrity—where lavish galas and luxurious gifts are the norm—and entices her into his realm of control with his tender mode of domination.
All the while, however, they both grapple with painful emotions brought about by the extenuating circumstances of their separate pasts.
While Drew remains both confident and conscientious in his parlay of power over Maxine, his own tragic secret lurks in every shadow upon his path in life. Behind the façade of his stage persona and the origin of old Manhattan society, he struggles to hide the unforgiving reality he faced as a child.
Just as Maxine finds the strength to conquer her own torment with Drew’s patience and guidance leading her toward closure, terrifying truths begin to chip away at the surface of his composure.
As the nightmarish details of Drew’s unimaginable life emerge, he fears that this new world he’d begun to build with Maxine will crumble around him.
As Maxine finds herself embroiled in the battle to save Drew’s tortured soul from the atrocities that continue to stalk his every move, two lost souls struggling to find comfort and completion converge.
However, as Drew opens his heart to Maxine’s unwavering support, he questions his own bravery, wondering if she’ll take a bow and make her exit…or if she’ll stick around for the encore?
Excuse me, Kind Sir,” Maxine's shy voice echoed softly as she poked just her head out of the bedroom door. “Would you please help a girl out with her dress?”
Drew had been fussing with his bowtie in the standing mirror in the hallway and straightening his cufflinks when she called. The sweetness of her expression resounded against his ears, as he pulled in a deep breath, anticipating this moment he'd been longing for all afternoon. At last his little one was ready for the ball...
On the other side of the door, Maxine had been in panic mode, carefully applying her make-up and struggling to make sure that every last hair was in place and perfectly pinned. Drew had offered to hire someone to do her hair and make-up to alleviate some of her stress, but Maxine insisted on handling every last brush stroke herself.
When Drew finally opened the door, he stopped—dead in his tracks as if trapped within the frame. His lips parted; his eyes softened as they cast upon Maxine.
Arms wrapped around her chest to hold the bodice in place while she waited for his assistance, Maxine couldn't help but to do a bit of staring herself. He looked so stunningly handsome in his simple black tux and tie, his hair—for once—in perfect place as if he were on stage, she mused to herself. The last time she’d seen him in a tux was on television at the Tony Awards. How times had changed…
Yet self-doubts began to surface. So typically Maxine, she fretted, wondering against his scrutiny if she looked appropriate—if she could actually play the role of date to Drew McKenzie that evening, if she truly measured up to the standards required for being there at his side and on his arm.
However, his gaze upon her left her slightly trembling in its wake. She'd wound her shiny locks into a French twist with tiny auburn ringlets playing so delicately around her face. The teal silk of the gown silhouetted every last curve of her body that he knew so well. Dangling and sparkling, the emerald earrings truly did accentuate the beauty of her honest green eyes. She’d even gained some weight, which pleased him to no end. He was simply elated to see a happy—healthier—Maxine standing before him, with a timid confidence that he found so endearing.
By the time he smiled at long last, his silence had nearly killed her.
Little one...oh, my sweet little one...” His stride was slow, closing the distance between them. “What the hell does a man say to the most beautiful woman in the world?”

Review - 'Jagged Ivory' Box Set by Lashell Collins

Book Series Review

First of all, this is an amazing series. Jagged Ivory is a rock and roll band with band members who think of themselves as brothers and best friends. The series starts with lots of drugs, dirty sex, no morals and five arrogant men who need to be knocked down a few pegs. The women they met and fall in love with are big reasons the men shape up and become better people.
Books 1 and 3—Jagged Hearts and Jagged Addiction, respectively—are the most ‘rock and roll’ of the series. Hearts is all about indulging in vices and Addiction is fighting those vices.
Books 2, 4 and 5—Jagged Dreams, Secrets and Surrender, respectively—are more about the couples finding one another and working through their problems that don’t really involve the band or the band mates.
The boys of Jagged Ivory and the women they love are intriguing characters that draw you in and make you think about the books for days after you read them. The romance sweeps you off your feet and the men are to die for. Especially Benji and Otis. The men and women find redemption, a new reason to live and love, and I enjoyed reading about their ups and downs, misunderstandings, and the beauty of life. I love how the author introduced children in the series and forced the men to settle down—the sweetness factor was through the roof!—but it took away from the rock and roll edge.
The series takes place over a few months during the European and US legs of the tour (I wish the timeline would’ve been spread out to include the Australian and Asian legs of the tour) and I think all of the books overlapped with each other. Meaning, Book 2 began a few days/weeks or so before Book 1 ended; the same with the rest of them. So the author copied and pasted various scenes from the previous book and included them in the next book. This probably wouldn’t have been a problem for me had I not read most of the books back to back.
All the books are wonderfully formatted but they could use a good edit to fix typos, passive voice, unnecessary exclamation marks, etc. I won’t go into all the technical issues here—I’ve already mentioned them in the individual reviews I wrote for these books—but I think some of the problems I noticed are just my opinion. Other readers may not consider them problems at all.
There is love, hope, fighting personal demons, and a dozen emotions that will make your head spin. The plots are well thought out and developed, as are the characters and the world in which they live. The series is definitely worth checking out and I’m happy I did.

Review - 'Jagged Surrender' by Lashell Collins

Wow! This book rivals book 3, Jagged Addiction, as my favorite in the series.
Brooke is an amazing, strong woman and she takes no crap off anyone. She’s a ballet instructor, and a stripper. Yep, you read right. She strips for extra cash to pay off her student loans and to survive in LA. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.
Otis made a huge man-whore mistake in the last book and now he’s paying for it. Though he was the victim in the sex tape scandal, I thought he got what he deserved. He needed to be taken down a few pegs but he didn’t really start to reevaluate his life until Brooke crashed into him on the highway and totaled his outrageously expensive car. Loved it!
Romance bloomed slowly but it made sense. She’s been hurt before, she’s careful around men, and foolish Otis made a bet with his brother, Noah, to become emotionally attached and opened with a woman, so Otis did everything in his power to woo her. Not get in her pants right off the bat. Their love was special, he was a wonderful gentleman, and I love their banter and jokes about him as her ‘sugar daddy’. Very funny. Even though it was all an act as first, he turned over a new leaf and fell in love with her. She let go of the wall around her heart and fell in love with him. Beautiful.
And then idiot rock star ruined it. *Sigh* I soooo wanted to slap Otis a few times for Brooke. I felt her pain, the betrayal, her sorrow, and I teared up for her. I felt his regret and anguish, and wanted to hug him.
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too sure I’d like Otis’s story. For one, I’m not crazy about his name but the nickname of ‘O’ is awesome. Two, he always seemed too petulant, arrogant and slutty in the previous books. But that’s also his appeal. The man is downright sexy and he knows it. Anyway, I loved this book and the way Brooke knocked him to his knees. He needed a woman who wasn’t impressed with his stardom and made him work for the privilege to be in her presence.
The book is longer than the other ones and there was definitely a lot of story in it even though it took place in a short amount of time, not counting the last two chapters. Otis and Brooke’s love story surprised me, made me laugh out loud and wipe my eyes. Not many books can do that for me anymore.
I noticed the use of passive voice, constant POV shifts and a few typos in this story, just like in the others. The plot was solid, however, and I overlooked my peep peeves to read a truly awesome book. Definitely recommended.

Review - 'Jagged Secrets' by Lashell Collins

Janie and Buzzy (or Robby as she called him) fell in love in high school but then she broke off their relationship without ever telling him why. He later followed his dream and became a rock star while she gave up her dream of a writing career and now works as a waitress to raise their son. When they reconnect years later, sparks fly and old hurts surface.
The best part about the book, for me, is Bobby—Janie and Buzzy’s eight year old son. He’s sweet and genuine.
I liked Buzzy for the most part but I couldn’t connect with Janie. I understand why she broke Buzzy’s heart and never told him about their son, but it irks me when a woman puts aside her wants and needs for a man’s wants and needs. Her reasoning was flawed and she was just too prideful.
I understood and felt Buzzy’s anger and pain much better than Janie’s. I lost respect for Buzzy, however, when he cast aside his live-in fling that had traveled with him on the road for about two months. He kicked the woman off the tour bus because Janie had come back into his life and he didn’t even give her money to go back home. Did he expect her to hitchhike? Did he care if she wandered homeless through the streets of Cleveland? Low blow, Buzzy. I laughed when she ranted at him in front of everyone but I didn’t think Buzzy was punished enough for the callous way he’d treated her, especially since Janie wasn’t mad at him. Anyway, that subplot just rubbed me the wrong way.
The story was good, well thought out, but I’d guessed a lot of the plot points early on. I enjoyed it mainly because of the child, Bobby, and the side characters. The band mates are awesome as usual and I love seeing how the other relationships progress.
There was a lot of head hopping, passive voice and a few typos that took me out of the story. The formatting of the book was superb, like the others, but I wished it would’ve been edited better.
I liked the book all in all and will read the last book of the series soon.
