Excerpt

Keller gently tugged on her hand. “I don’t care what anyone thinks anymore.”

Jo relented. He gave the door a harder than necessary push and it slammed it shut. Then, pressing Jo against the wall, he held her there with his body, deeply kissing her.

Taken by surprise, she stiffened, but then melted into him, wrapping her arms around his neck.

“What if it had been you? I haven’t been able to shake that image from my mind,” he mumbled against her lips.

“But it wasn’t.”

“I was so stupid.” He gripped her hair in his hands. “You could have been hurt.”

She pressed against his shoulder. “I’m not. This job has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but I have done it.”
His fingers traced her jawline. “But you shouldn’t have to.”

“Don’t say that. You sound like my father.” She tried to push past him, but he shifted his weight using his body to block her exit.

“I don’t say that because you’re a woman, I say that be-cause I care about you. Today, for the first time, I saw how really difficult every step across the bow has been for you.”

“I didn’t complain!”

“Not for a second. And that’s what makes you so special, but that doesn’t mean I want you to do it.”

She laid her head on his shoulder, let him pull her to him, let him support her body. Her muscles melted as the stress washed from them. “We’ll be done soon. Right?”

“One more day. The tanks will be full, and you’ll be done. You hit the mark.”

She tried to run the numbers through her head. Yes, this second trip had run smooth as silk until Pete had tumbled overboard. Keller had put them on good fishing and they’d been hauling nothing but full pots.

Still, the idea that she’d gone from barely making a scratch to earning enough to pay off the loan in those five days seemed impossible.

Keller moved them a few steps back toward the bed. He sat on the edge and guided her to his lap. Pushing her hair off her shoulder, he kissed her neck. “I’m going to miss having you here.”

She leaned her temple to his, and couldn’t stop the soft laugh. “I’ll miss you too, but I won’t miss being on this boat."
